Absolutely---no question about it. Twice I've been through the experience of losing my purse and had to call and replace all of my ID's, cancel my credit cards and checks, put passwords on my accounts, replace my library cards and medications, change my locks, watch my credit report for suspicious behavior, etc. It is horrible. I didn't care about the money much, but the pure hassle was a nightmare.
Yes, I would honestly return it, intact, perhaps with an understanding smile and a bow on top. I remember too well that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.
I also remember once when I lost my purse, the next day my pharmacy called me and told me I could pick it up. People had found it and saw my medication and took it to the pharmacy that was on the bottle. I'll never know who they were but I remember feeling so relieved that they turned it in---untouched.

I do. I saw a movie one time where the guy said, "Look at that, morality sold and for what? A mere ten dollars." That is what I think about when I find a wallet/purse (Marrying Man, Don Cheatle says it to Nick "I wish I were Elvis" Cage)

I have done it. I found a wallet with $400 in it in the store where I worked. I called the person and she (owner's mother) demanded I bring it to their house! I told her I couldn't and was at work. She slammed the phone down and showed up 20 min later, angrily took it from me and walked away. No thank you. Nothing.
It was STILL the right thing to do.
Also - one time I found a woman's bus pass (worth about $300) and I looked up her name and phoned her to tell her I had it and would mail it to her. She freaked and called me a stalker! Stay away! Don't ever call again!!

Been there, done that.....would do it again. If I had lost my wallet, I'd like for someone to be honest and return it as was.

Yes. I found one after Halloween and when I looked inside, there was no real ID but there was a business card of the guys Parole officer. I called him and sent it to him.
