What the hell is wrong with some people? You weren't asking for their moral opinion on you having a tattoo done so why don't they just shut the hell up?
Mine only hurt for a day or two. It's shouldn't be too bad. Make sure you keep it moisturised and protected with Vaseline while it heals.

It lasts for about a week. Take something for the pain if you have to, but it's not really too bad. I had a hard time putting clothing on for a few days, but other than that, everything turned out great! Here's some advice though...the best thing I can tell you to help the tattoo from scabbing and to keep the color in, is to use AQUAPHOR. It's a little expensive, but it kept my tattoo from scabbing, and the color looks better than my husbands ( he didn't use the ointment). At night, after you wash it, put the Aquaphor on there and put clear plastic saran wrap, take it off in the morning to let it air out. Do this for about 3 or 4 days. Then just use the Aquaphor after washing. My tattoo still looks like I just had it done, and it's been months!

it's like a big graze, which is essentially what it is. it will hurt for a few days untill the scab has gone (whatever you do DO NOT remove the scab let it heal gently). Just keep it moisturised with something like aqeuos cream. I also use antiseptic cream in the early stages as well. There are loads of different creams you can use, from nappy rash cream to hemmaroid lotion! The really bad bit is the itching which starts when it stops hurting (conveniently!) I use aqeuos cream again to help with that.
Hope thats some assisstance to you and remeber it's ok to be completely anal about it as it heals as it is going to be there for the rest of your life.

The pain from the tattoo only hurts for about 2-3 days. The healing of it can hurt, keep putting something like Savlon on it but not Vaseline as this takes the colour out. The healing hurts because its like a cut or a strape from falling over and your tattoo will scab over like any over cut but don't pick it off! Leave it and don't scratch it.

Yes it is normal. I have 4 of them in various places... it stings because its a million little cuts and scratches... It will start to scab up with in the next day or two. Keep it clean make sure you don't scrub it. Keep it covered with whatever cream's they told you to use. I prefer Aquaphor for my tattoos.
When it starts to scab it will itch like CRAZY don't scratch it. If you scratch it, it won't heal right. Keep it moisturized that will help with the itching. If it itches really bad and you can't stand it anymore you can try slapping it... I know that sounds funny but anything to keep the scabs from falling off before they are ready.
In the meantime, Advil and ice will help.
Good luck and I hope this helps.

It stings? Keep the lotion on it and the bandage. I found mine did not hurt for long at all. If you can deal with the needles that were used to put the tat on I would think healing up from it is no big deal.
Did you not realize it was going to hurt? My tat is 12"x12" my first one as well. Keep it clean and hopefully you got yours done from a professional, clean tattooist. If it gets infected from either not keeping it clean, or where ever you got it done at was not clean then go to the doctors.

Depending on how big the tattoo is the duration of pain varies. It's usually for about a month with a full shoulder tattoo though but as the days progress it hurts less if you keep the strain away from it.
btw what did you get a tattoo of if you dont mind me asking?

From my experience, i found the pain only lasted about a couple of days, unless i knocked it, then it was sore, other than that all i really experienced was itchiness, i lived off putting savlon on it for a week or two!
Only you will be able to tell, everyone has a different pain threshold and everyone experiences these kinda things differently!
