The Christian comments here still do not address the core issue.
There are two basic questions.
First, are you saved by faith or works? If you believe you have to have faith, that good works alone will not get you to heaven, then you are saying that god cares whether people believe in him more than he cares that people act as people like Jesus said he wants people to act.
Second, why does an omni-potent/present/scient being want to be worshiped? There's a word for this and the word is egomaniac.

What evidence? Science? I suppose you are directing this towards a Judeo-Christian audience? Lets say you are. Science and the Bible go hand and hand friend. How can you be so against it if "you believe something against the evidence that we have"? Hmm. There is eveidence for the existence of a Creator. Don't be so sure about yourself just yet. Before ridiculing or bashing, make sure you come with a good argument for debate. And if you are so concerned about these things then EDUCATE yourself about those things instead of drawing opinions from what you have been told or heard on TV.
Oh and God (the God of the Bible) does care if you believe in Him. Thats why he sent His beloved son to save the world and not to condemn it. He desires that His creation (humankind) rekindle their love and desire for their creator (God). He cares for His creation.
Blessings.

I am all for going where the evidence is - but it still shows me God exists.
As for why would God care if you believed in him...it has more to do with having a relationship than anything else.

There is a term for a theist of the kind your question implies, but I forgot it. Albert Einstein actually believed in God and didn't think that God gave a damn. According to what I've read.

What evidence are you talking about? A narrow spectrum of observation of the material universe? Even a moment of basic introspection reveals evidence to me that goes beyond your impoverished pseudo-empiricism.
God cares because God is love.
