"'sell by date", is the date the store should throw it away if it still has not been sold.

"Best by Date", is the date the consumer should throw it away if after they have bought it and still have not eaten it.

Sell by Jan. 9 means that if it is still in the store after that date the store cannot sell it any longer. Best by Jan. 9 means that the quality of the product is only guaranteed until that date. If you can tell when yogurt has gone sour by the smell and it smells good to you I say eat it. Considering how cheap yogurt is I would just buy more.

Yes you can. Sell by is when the store has to sell it but you can eat the food for up to a week afterwards. Best by date or use by date, I wouldn't eat anything after those dates.

the sell by date is the last day the grocer can leave item on the shelf, use by date is the last date you should consume the item before the posibility of it going bad.
