We just read about the Tang dynasty yesterday! One of the stories we read was about emperor Xuanzong who became emperor in 712. "He surrounded himself with poets, including two of the most famous poets in Chinese history: Li Bo and Du Fu. Du Fu was serious and hardworking, but apparently Li Bo took life easier. He wrote:
"Life in the World is but a big dream;
I will not spoil it by any labor or care."
Li Bo often got himself into trouble by fighting and drinking too much alcohol. Once while he was drunk, he tried to read a poem to Emporer Xuanzong. Instead, Li Bo threw up all over the ruler of China. Eventually, he left the ruler's court and became a wanderer. According to legend, he died after a night of drinking. While crossing a river in a boat, Li Bo saw the moon's reflection in the water and reached for it, trying to hug it. He fell out of the boat and drowned while reaching for the moon. "p. 167
Also during the Tang Dynasty, "Chinese scientists tried to create gold and find the secret to living forever. Their experiments eventually led them to mix charcoal, nitrate and saltpeter together. The results suprised them -- the mixture exploded! The Chinese scientists had discovered gunpoweder. A warning appears in a Tang chemistry book: Beware when mixing these ingredients because the mixture might explode right in your face and burn off your beard. Under the Tang dynasty the Chinese used the gunpowder not for warfare but for creating spectacular fireworks. It seems fitting that the brilliant Tang dynasty should be remembered for giving to the world the magnificent gift of fireworks." p. 168 (These are from Pearson Learning Core Knowledge Core Knowledge History and Geography, Edited by E.D. Just search for the Tang Dynasty on wikipedia and note down what you find interesting.
For example:
During the Tang dynasty, many great poets emerged. Li, Po, Tu Fu, and Po Chu-i and prose master Han Yu appeared when the political decline had begun. The printing of books and sharing of ideas promoted cultural unity.

The astronauts drank Tang.
No really don't use that I was trying to be funny.
On the Yahoo search I discovered that it is thought that it was brought to its knees by a climate shift.
Look it up.
