I happen to believe that Noah's Ark was fact, so I'm not trying to make fun of it in this answer as some of the others have.

Noah didn't take all of the animals we see today, but only representatives of each "kind." So, he didn't need pugs, retrievers, pit bulls, etc. as representatives of the dog kind, just wolves, which are the most genetically diverse type of dog. Then, after the wolves were released, they evolved by losing genetic information and being naturally (or artificially in the case of pugs and poodles ;-) ) selected. In a similar manner, only the most genetically diverse birds were needed on the ark, and others with symbolic meaning, such as the doves we know were taken. So, an ancestor of woodpeckers would have been taken, and may or may not have had the capability to peck wood. However, the wood on the ark was covered in pitch and wasn't filled with bugs as a result, which would have made it unattractive to a woodpecker. They would have found their food (insects) elsewhere on the ark. God divinely directed the proper animals to the ark in the first place, so he could easily have directed them to not eat the critical insects that also occupied the ark. :-)

Well, considering that there were only two birds and a very big boat, he may have put them in two different areas so that they wouldn't both be destroying the same place. Or, the wood of the boat may have been coated with tar on the inside making it very difficult for any woodpecker to get through.

I think he kept them in a cage. The reason for that is because if he'd let the roam free then we would not have termites in this day and age.Woodpeckers eat termites and other bugs so then we would not have termites now...or flies, fleas, ticks,on and on and on...
