I'm planning to get a puppy but deciding on either a silky or maltese. saw a few pics of silky and find that they dun look as cute when they were pup (no offence) but for maltese, m afraid their tear stain will be troublesome... Any suggestions?

I think what's more important is how the breed's traits will fit with you rather than mere appearance. Silky Terriers are just that, terriers. Terriers have an independent attitude and often feel they are a big dog trapped in a small body. My mother's silky definitely rules the house with an iron paw. Maltese were bred to be companions and not as working dogs so their temperment is quite different than a terrier's. I see these dogs alike only in size and very different as far as the type of dog they are and as far as the type of owner that would be best for them. I would definitely recommend talking with breeders to determine which breed you would be more comfortable with.

Personally I prefer the Silky. It is a bit larger and sturdier, and I think the coat is much less troublesome---plus it is not white like a Maltese.

I also like the terrier personality (when properly socialized) better.

When you talk about how they look as a puppy---don't look at a photo of an 8 week old---that stage is over fast. Look at a 5 month old .

Remember you are getting a dog that will live for more than 12 years so it is more important to find a dog whose temperament and needs match your family than how it looks for 8-10 weeks.

Good luck.

Any dog with white fur will tend to show their tear stains more...you just have to keep up with it like a dog of any other color.
The Maltese is a VERY sweet animal...haven't yet met one that wasn't. Great personalities too.
The silky i don't know enough about....but I own a maltese. Just remember that they're more fragile than even THEY know....so keep any wild tendencies under control.
