I like the looks of the downsized Grand Cherokee, the Compass and with a manual transmission it can get about 30 hwy and 25 round town. Anyone have any experience with them?

They have not been very well recieved by the public. The Compass is not a SUV, they call it a crossover, but in reality it is a Dodge Caliber. Jeep building what is really a car just does not set well with most Jeep buyers. The Caliber costs less, and in my opinion looks better than the Compass. I dont see the vehicle having a very long run.

As you know, I'm a Ford Salesperson. What I did not mention is that the dealership across the street sells Jeep as well as Subaru (and Dodge / Chrysler). I went over there about a month ago to investigate the compass for a neighbor and spoke to one of the guys there that I know. His demo is a Compass Limited 4x4 and he said it was underpowered and not getting the rated fuel economy (of course we are at 9000 feet with nothing but hills to climb). He mentioned something about a bigger engine possibly coming later, but depending on where you are you may not need one.

Since you are comparing small SUV's take a look at the following link. Click on the Edmunds competitive comparison and you can pick up to five to compare (including the Compass). This is a quick way to compare specifications, dimensions, etc. and can also be done through the Edmunds.com site. As the last guy said, check out the new RAV4 and CRV as well, they are almost pushing midsize now, but getting great reviews!

BTW: The Compass and Patriot share a platform (same basic vehicle with different body / style), so their dimensions are almost the same.

It's basically a midget liberty. It's like a Liberty and a Ford focus got drunk and made babies. The result is a tinny, underpowered, overpriced and aesthetically uninspiring hunk of metal and plastic that should be relegated to the cheerleader hall of fame. If MPG is your goal, go buy a yaris.

On the mini SUV scene, I recommend you also avoid the Ford escape, it's very disappointing.

Rav-4's and CRV's are two vehicles I have heard nothing but good news about. I've never owned either so can't talk from personal experience...

Enjoy!
