I'm concerned about the health risks. How do you use it and how do you dispose of it?

Flea collars aren't very effective at all at preventing/killing fleas. They can also have toxic effects on the cat due to the chemical that is used (permethryn/pyrethryn). The safest and most effective solution is to use a topical solution that you can get from your vet (Frontlnie, Advantage, Revolution). These products are more expensive than a flea collar, but they are much safer.

My vet told me that a flea collar for a dog or a cat is a waste of money it will only keep fleas off where the collar is front line is the best i know it cost a little more but it is so worth it

When you put a flea collar on a cat (any animal) Use the 2 finger rule. Leave enough room for your index and middle finger to fit (fingers side by side) inside collar. From the neck of the animal to the inside of the collar. Actually it is pretty important as to how you put the collar on. They can hang themselves if they get them caught just right. You have to make sure, especially if it is a kitten, puppy baby animal to constantly check the tightness of the collar because the grow so quickly, and become to tight before you know it.
Personally, I don't use flea collars on our cats, due to the reasons above and friends whom have related these true stories to me. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
HooYah

It is much better to use Advantage or Frontline. If you have an adult cat you can purchase those online as long as you follow directions and use according to the weight of your cat.

Flea collars absolutely don't work as they concentrate the insecticide only in the neck area of the cat - too close and too concentrated which may cause allergic reactions.

Flea collars are great to put in your vaccuum cleaner bag. Any fleas or eggs you suck up will be killed in the bag.

The flea collar is just strapped on the cat's neck, same as a dog. When it had to be replaced, just throw it away in the garbage can.

sure they sell them, you just have to make sure they can come off easy so that if the cat gets caught on something it can get away. (same for dogs) health risks...very little, dispose of it...just take it off and throw it away and wash your hands. i have two cats and i use the drops you can also get herbal drops too...i have never had a problem with fleas or ticks and my cats are outside most of the time

flea collars contain a lot of pesticides and they really don't work, personally I wouldn't recommend it. since your cat is always grooming itself, they could accidentally ingest some of the pesticide and become sick. I suggest using frontline plus for cats or advantage which is placed between the collar bones where the cat can not reach.
this past summer my dog got fleas from our neighbors dog and passed it along to my cat. luckily it wasn't bad and one application of the frontline did the trick. hope this helps a bit.

My vet says Revolution is better. You put a drop on the back of their neck. It kills a lot more than just fleas...heart worms, etc. That flea collar can get them hung up on something if they jump around and run around and get caught on something.

just put it on and it kills the fleas before the fleas can drink from the eyes that is how fleas live they feed from the skin and have to drink from the eyes nasty huh??? so use the flea collar for kittys sake and there are usually no side effects
