Oh you naughty thing! If its really not your busines then you shouldnt get nosed into it but if you have your reasons to justify it, then go right ahead! lol.
Use a hot iron! This melts the glue and keeps the letter flat. You should be able to open it right up if you dont scorch the paper. Use a mild heat first and that should work well enough. Or you can look at other seals in the envelope, sometimes the glue in the other seals is weaker than the glue that is used to lick the envelope closed. You sneaky one!!
An easier and safer method if trust is an issue in this case; be around when the letter is opened or ask about what it says after it is opened. If they cant answer you and show you then tell them you will just open it on your own next time when you get to it first. If you are trying to hide something, forget about it... skeletons always have a way of falling out of the closet!

One time tested method is to use steam. The envelope is sealed with glue. When the glue is heated, it softens. If you take your time and don't rush it, you can steam the envelope open. Be very careful not to pull or stretch the paper or you will get unusual wrinkles and they are very telling. Practice on several envelopes before you start.
And make sure you think carefully before this course of action. Sometimes opening Pandora's Box charts unexpected courses and it becomes impossible to close again. My sincere recommendation about opening envelopes in this way... DON'T.
Best of luck with your choice.
