No, it would be a violation of the Migratory Bird Act to have the bird *or any parts or products thereof*. This means that you can also not possess feathers! It's punishable by (as I recall) up to a $1000 fine and or up to a year in jail.
If you think you won't be prosecuted I recall a case of a woman in the last five years who was raided by the fbi for making spirit catchers using cardinal and other wild bird feathers.
Aside from the fact that keeping a wild bird just isn't a real good idea.

I have always heard that permits are required to keep certain animals, but I think that refered to dangerous animals or threatened species. Yet having lived in the south all my life, I have seen foxes raised with dogs and deer play with children. No one has said anything about it. I don't think you would have any problems with a cardinal. There are laws regarding the safe and proper treatment of pets and other animals. You will still be subject to those laws should you mistreat the bird. Consider this: If you are caging the bird against its wishes, would you like to be caged. If the bird chooses to hang around, then enjoy the bird.

I took in abandoned and injured birds of all types, but I first had to train with (at that time) a member from the Phoenix society, I became a member after about a year of proper taring and was able to care for endangered and exotic birds. Best to see if there's an agency such as this in your area and ask if this bird is on any list that would make it illegal to have in your home. After rehabilitating these birds I (HAD) to release them back into the wild. Good Luck

I would never take a wild beautiful bird like a cardinal and cage it up in anyway. They are free to share there song with the world. You could call your Animal Control office to ask about owning one. What cage or avairy could you put him in so he will not miss his freedom?Good luck.

It is illegal to keep any bird native to the United States (a cardinal) as a house pet. If the bird is injured please take it to a wildlife refuge or even a local vet.

No. You cannot keep native birds as pets nor do they make good pets.
