Kristina,

Brainstorm! What possible things may cause M&M's to melt? Obviously heat, perhaps moisture as well. (I can't think of anything else)

To test for heat, get a standard heat source. It doesn't need to be very hot. Between 95 - 100 degrees. It could be a heating pad, a very low oven (mine starts at 150 degrees), or even in a closed space with an incandescent light bulb. Get as close to 98.8 as possible, using a thermometer. It needs to be a consistant temperature.

Heat test 5 M&Ms of each color. See if one color melts quicker than another??? Make a chart. What happens in 30 seconds, 1 minute, and even 5 minutes. (Take photos during the process for your report) Take note of anything you notice.

Then try and see what happens if the M&Ms are on a damp surface(at room temperature), for the same time periods. You might try the same in shallow water. Observe results and chart them.

Then try heat with moisture (at the same time), and follow the same format.

The key is to change just one thing at a time and to use several of each color.

Be sure to write your conclusions, including all the data.

Good luck!

It seems to me that the saying is "M & M's melt in your mouth >>> not in your hands"

Think about that
