Have there ever been any high ranking politicians that have admitted that they were Atheist? Or would that be tantamount to political suicide? Also, in the next election, if the person running for President was an Atheist, would the religious vote for him or her?

Actually, theres even a law preventing an Atheist from being President. I imagine most Presidents have been intelligent enough not to tell people they're Atheist. The Christians have too much power in the US for a President to committ political suicide by admitting they're Atheists.

I'm not American (my husband is) but I don't care what religion a leader is so long as they keep it out of their administration.

i'm making a huge gamble that there is already been an atheist president and probably a gay one. those are presidents who both had no affiliations or had the position rumored to be atheists. Presidents Who were no longer contributors Of Any Church William Henry Harrison Andrew Johnson Ulysses Simpson grant Rutherford Richard Hayes Presidents Whose religious perspectives Are uncertain James Madison James Monroe Martin Van Buren John Tyler Zachary Taylor Chester Alan Arthur Thomas Jefferson, Freethinker Abraham Lincoln, Deist And Admirer Of Thomas Paine also rumored to be gay. (see log cabin republicans) As for even as a brazenly gay president or an atheist will be elected i might want to be hedging my bets on a gay president as long as he's a bible thumper as a nicely as a @#$@ thumper. the vast majority of the right wing are deeply religious and a minority of the left are religious. Non-faith is a larger taboo then being gay to them.

they want to do good for the people as a whole, admitting that they were atheist would only do good in gaining the atheist vote. The sad news is that most people with deep pockets are either not atheist or choose to avoid that question because being atheist makes them seem less righteous. On the good side, you are not a politician so you can believe anything you want to and call yourself whatever you desire.

Jesse Ventura of Minnesota was.

A real democracy wouldn't care. And given the track record of the religious in government - the nazis, the crusades, WWI, WWII, Bush, Nixon, Carter, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum - the reason for opposition to an atheist politician is that the christians, jews, muslims and others _want_ corruption and perversion to continue.

I don't know about the religious people, but I try to vote for a candidate based on whether I think he/she is the right person for the position and whether we seem to hold the same values, regardless of their religion or lack of.

It would be political suicide. Some people who claim to be religious WOULD in fact vote for an atheist if he/she were running on their party ticket. This is because some people view their allegiance to their party as a higher calling than their allegiance to God. Their idea of separation of church and state tells them it's alright to separate God from their political decisions. I could almost guarantee you that people like Kennedy or Pelosi would vote for Satan himself if he were running on the Democratic ticket opposite a Republican.

It would be political suicide. Especially in a country where 85% believe in one form of deity or another. I hope a day will come that those who are in Congress are not afraid of telling their constituents that they are in fact Atheists.
