You should have been using plain water and gauze since the time the teeth came in. You can do that if you can't find the Gerber toothpaste...

Hello

Have you tried special baby toothpaste? It is made just for toddlers. So is aimed at the fact that they like to eat toothpaste rather than spit it out. I know the UK does a baby toothpaste called milk toothpaste, which is for use on children who are getting teeth. Also brushing with no toothpaste would be fine as well. As even the brushing action will remove bits from the teeth he has and help with the gums and if there is no toothpaste than you don't have to worry about him not spitting it out.

Also if his gums are sore due to teething, brushing them may not help. Try some clean clothes soaked in really cold water and rinsed out. Or get him a teething ring that will sooth the gums and help toughen them up.

Hope this helps

You don't have to use toothpaste, but there are several kinds made especially for little ones. You also should have started wiping his teeth/gums from the time his teeth first started to come in and now you should be helping him brush his teeth. Regardless, if you're not doing those things ,it's not too late to start by helping him by gently brushing his teeth using just water.

If his mouth stings, he should be seen by a dentist, or you should check with his doctor, just to be sure everything is okay.

My son's pediatrician advised me to just brush my son's mouth after every meal with a damp cloth. When I told her that I used a finger brush and special toothpaste Gerber Grins and Giggles Infant tooth and gum cleaner, she said "Hey, even better." As soon as your baby starts teething you should definitely start brushing... or at least caring for the inside of their mouth. Have you ever seen children with "baby bottle mouth?"

Is better not to use toothpaste at this point because they'll just swallow it before it does the job on their teeth and causes tummy upsets. Also, no need to use toothbrush at this point - a damp wash cloth rubbed over the teeth is better. Introduce toothbrush at 2.

There is tooth paste you can buy for baby's and toddlers that is ok for them to swallow, it doesn't have any floride in it. You could also just take a wet washcloth and wipe his teeth of with that.
