The painting was actually called "Gaze of the Green Lady" and the artist was Vladimar Tretchikoff. She has luxuriant black hair and red lips and is dressed in an exotic gold robe, her hands are folded out of sight.
In the 1960's and 1970's,"Chinese Girl" to give the 1950 portrait it's proper title graced many a living room across the globe.

It's called surprisingly enough 'the blue lady'
was very popular in homes of the 60's and 70's
It is now considered retro and these prints sell for lots.
Strange how fashions change. 20 years ago they could be picked up in any charity or junk shop for pennies!!!
This print was very popular with the working class at the time and was considered low-brow and kitch by those 'in the know'
funny how the situation now seems reversed!
you can google for the artists name but i think it's tretchicov or something like that. He painted several variations of the same theme.

It's by a South african artist called Tretchikoff who died late last year. I am lucky enough to ahve a framed original copy of the print. You can still get hold of them off e-bay sometimes for about £70 and also try web based poster sites. Try
searching for Chinese Girl by Tretchikoff on www.art.co.uk where you can get a poster for £27.99.

I know the one you mean. They were sold in places like Courts and similar, and were for people to hang in their houses to show what discerning individuals they were. There were quite a few, and several have gained notoriety, notably the crying boy that is supposed to be linked to house fires and death.
I can't help you with name or the artist, but I can see clearly in my memory the one you refer to.
