I'm trying to get more involved in street photography/ candid shots, and I was wondering: can I take pictures of people without their permission? i mean if they're on the street or something, not in their houses or, say, the toilet. I know in many cases it's more polite, but I mean legally/ ethically...

I am a newspaper photographer, so this question is asked often. If the person is in a public place (street, park, etc.) you can legally photograph them without their permission as long as the photos are not going to be used commercially (like in an ad for a product or service). If they are in a place where they can expect reasonable privacy (bathroom, changing room at Wal-mart) you cannot photography them. Please realize that a shopping mall is not a public place and you would need permission from the owners of the mall and the owner of the store to photograph there. Hope this helps!

Legally: you can take pictures of anyone you would like - it's all public domain. However, selling them or displaying them without their permission can be illegal. Ethically: a release form is normally suggested. Realistically, most people would never know that you have taken their picture and/or are going to use it. If you know you have a great shot(s) of a person and you know you want to exhibit it, do your best to get a release. I've known a few photographers who have had to pull photos due to no releases.

i believe you have a right to take a picture of anything you wish but .
if a person gets in the way its not your fault,
carry a big stick just in case you run into someone that makes you eat your camera or shoves it up a place the sun dont shine.

You do not have to ask people if you can take a picture of them, it is just the courteous thing to do. The only time you have to ask is if you in their own private, personal space, such as their home.

Also bear in mind that some cultures, in all seriousness, believe that having their photograph taken is akin to having their soul taken out of their body.

It is illegal. If you are caught. And nothing is illegal if you don't get caught.
