War isn't good for anything.
Why is it that people believe that there is no way to oppose things like slavery, fascism, the holocaust, etc. other than war? India managed to gain independence from Great Britain through peaceful means, why couldn't Ireland and the USA and others do the same? Such opposition is not easy. It is hard. Gandhi himself said when asked if he really thought his methods could be used against someone like Hitler "not without great casualties." That's right, many people would have died. But as Gandhi went on to point out, and I will join him, many people died fighting in WWII. There is no easy solution for dealing with some of the world's problems, but war is not the answer.

Wars are the worst use of human potential. Wars lower thousands or million of soldiers on both sides to the level of savage animals intent on individual and group survival while killing and subduing the other side at the whim of their leaders while the families of all participants and many bystanders suffer directly and indirectly. FDR said, "I hate war." Yet he oversaw WWII and relentlessly pursued victory. Unfortunately, because we do not live in utopia there are wars forced upon us by hostile acts or even developing circumstances. We should make every effort to avoid these. BUT, if all else fails, when we go to war it should be known by all that it will be an unlimited war and that we will attempt to totally destroy our adversaries using all the resources in our arsenals while limiting our own casualties to the bare minimum. Today, due to the mindset and reasoning of certain foes we should stomp loudly, carry a big stick and use it quickly but seldom.

While the obvious answer would be "nothing". A war does rev up the economy. After all... it was the second world war that brought us out of the great depression.

Nothing.
The Irish had it good under British rule.
It was wrong to oppose Hitler and Japan.
Being subject to the tyranny of King George was better than being free.
The Jews were wrong to have not let themselves be slaughtered in 1948.
Slavery was actually a good institution for blacks in the US.
All these wars were wrong and good for nothing.

War is good for the military-industrial complex and it is good for the government because it can be used as an instrument of fear to control the masses. Grab them by the nuts and their hearts and minds will follow.

Giving lazy, unemployed, Neo-Marxists something to "struggle" against, evidently.
The New Left is such a laughable collection of bargain-basement intellectuals, who could all benefit immensely from doing an honest day's work.
