Fifty dollars is exactly right, plus tolls. You can also take a train to Penn Station or a bus to the Port Authority in NYC and take another bus, a subway or even a taxi from there to W. 87th street. You'll save a few dollars but if you have a lot of luggage (more than one bag), it'll be a pain and taxi is the only way to go.

Most cabs have a flat rate from Newark to Manhattan for 50.00. If that seems to high for you, try taking NJ transit to the Newark airport. They have a train that takes you right there. Costs about 12 $ or so per person from Penn Station. Of course then you have factor in how many people are in your party, and how much of a hassel it will be to get to penn station with all your luggage. Sometimes a Taxi makes more sense.
