By definition (battery) you are testing a DC voltage. Make sure the meter is set to test DC and set it on the high side. For example, if it should be a nine volt battery, set the meter above that - 10 or 15 volts or whatever option it gives you. By tradition, the black lead is the negative side, but check the markings on the meter to be sure. Touch the negative lead to the negative side of the battery (should be marked on the battery casing), and the positive lead (usually red) to the positive terminal of the battery and read the meter.
