Indigenous means originated in, so an indigenous religion would be the original religion of a place.

For example, in the U.S., the indigenous religion would be that of the Native American people.

Essentially the term applies to the religion of any group of people, culture, area etc. that is, or was, unique to that group. It is a religion that is specifically associated wtih that group. As an example the various Native tribes in the United States had Indiginous religious beliefs that they practiced before the interferance of outsiders. Shinto is an example of an indiginous religion. It is from Japan and was not practiced anywhere outside of Japan unitl the Japanese started leaving their native country. ALL cultures had an indiginous religion at one time, although many were nearly destroyed by outsiders, (that of the Romans, Greeks, Norse, Celts, Aztecs and Native American Tribes as examples.) There is still a pull toward those indiginous beliefs in each person blood, IF they will but listen.
