I've been able to get from the Manchester, CT area to Brooklyn, NY in about 2 hours driving (fairly fast), leaving CT around 2am. There was no traffic. The same trip took me 4 hours on a Sunday afternoon.

Metro North is pretty reliable and I've never had any problems with it. Now, I usually take it between New York (Grand Central) and New Haven, which takes about 1hr and 45min. Obviously, the ride is shorter if you live near a station closer to NYC than New Haven.

It's more expensive to take the train during Peak hours plus you are charged a little more if you buy the ticket on the train, rather than in the station.

There are Metro North trains from Grand Central to Danbury but not many (10 a day with half of them during rush hour) and it's a long trip (around 2 hours). Rather than looking at the departure board or TV monitors you should probably ask at the information desk for which train to take. The destination listed will probably be New Haven unless it's a through train but the agent can tell you exactly which train to take and if you have to transfer. Once you're on the train just ask the conductor who checks your ticket if you're at all unsure about how to transfer -- they're very helpful. And if you need to come back the same day be sure to check the schedules. There aren't many trains back to Manhattan in the afternoon and evening. One-way peak hour fare is $14.25 and off peak is $10.75 if you buy your ticket at the station. It's about $5 more if you buy on the train.

Metro North is the best option, but it depends where you're going in CT. Metro North ends in New Haven, so if you're north/east of New Haven, you will have to drive to the train station in NH.
A train ride take about 30 min from Stamford, 70 min from Bridgeport and about 1.5 hours from New Haven (depending on whether the train is an express or a local).

Depending where in Connecticut. It's about 40 miles to Stamford , CT(about an hour) and 130 miles to Hartford, CT (3 hours) and yes, you do take the train North.
