Should feed your cat premium food from a pet store. A bit of canned and dry food should be fed. The canned food has extra water which will help prevent urinary infections. Add a bit of extra water to it and heat for a few secs in the microwave.
Looking at the ingredients on the food, avoid:
* Words such as "By-products," "meat and/or bone meal," "animal digest," most other descriptions including "digest" or "meal," and added sugars.
* Chemical preservatives, including BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, and propyl gallate
* Corn meal as a filler
* Excess of carbohydrate "fillers" (Dry food can contain as much as 50 percent grain)
After doing my own research, here are the premium foods I would feed my indoor cat (they might have kitten brands, but I have read that if it is really good quality, it can be fed to cats or kittens). You can go to the manufacturer's websites to get more info on each brand:

There is no "best" kitten food out there. It all differs from the needs from time to time. And it will differ from one cat to another. It is like asking what is the best food in the world?? Or the best ice-cream flavour? Everyone will have different opinions on what is best based on their own taste.
Even nutritionists and veterinarians have differing opinions on what is essential or good for animals. That is why the pet food industry is constantly evolving. With latest studies and trials, more essential nutrients are found and being added into pet foods, or some taken out or reduced.
What works for one may not work for the other. And that is why there is always argument on what is best for our pets. Some people say that home prepared meals are best, some say it is certain brand of commercial diets, while there are a handfull that will standby raw meats for their pets. There are some pets that seem to live a long and healthy life eating just table scaps too. Perhaps, you should rephrase your question to "what is the most POPULAR kitten food?"
But there are things to look out for when selecting certain foods for your kittens. When selecting commercial diets, search their labels first. The top 3 ingredients should contain at least 2 items that are meat-based. Those with a lot of by products are lesser in quality than those that provide meat. Check also the manufacturing and expriry dates, and make sure they are as fresh as possible. Check the protein content. Kittens need higher digestible protein for growth. (Do note that some by products such as hair and nails are also protein, but they are not digestible).
As for home made diets - weather cooked or raw, they should be in the right balance. This, you'd have to check with a veterinary nutritionist. There may be a lot of essential minerals and vitamins that you are lacking when preparing home made diets.
All in all, you are the ultimate judge of what is good for your cat. When you change its food, you'll be able to notice minor differences in your cat - be it body shape, fur coat, or even shape/smell of its poo. With that, you can judge what is good for your cat.

I have a 7-month old kitten and have been feeding him Hill's Science Diet® Kitten Original Dry food and he loves it. It is also highly recommended by Vets. They also have a Science Diet® Liver & Chicken Entrée Kitten that I attempted to alternate with the dry food when I first brought him home at 8 weeks. He didn't eat the wet food, so now I just leave the dry food out all day for him to graze (topping it off twice/day). It may be a little more expensive than the others, but worth it.

I think the best available supermarket brand of dry food is Purina ONE. As far as wet kitten food, there isn't much available at the supermarket; IAMs may be the only option. However, all supermarket foods contain by products, excessive grain, etc, and are not good for the cat.
For the best food you can get, look at something like Innova Evo Cat and Kitten,

It really depends on what your kitten prefers the taste of, ie ours won't eat anything fishy like tuna.
He likes Felix and Go Cats in Gravy for Kittens.

I feed Royal Canin to my kittens as same as the pedigree cat owners do when they were asked during the cat show.It has wide range of cat biscuits depend on yr cat needs. For cat can food, I recommend MIO Japanese brand. You can also boiled chicken breast meat with plain water to feed yr cat once a week.

I use Purina One Healthy Kitten Formula. You can actually see the difference physically in less than a week; faster growth, healthier fur and lots more energy.
