Outside of mormons, is polygamy (multiple spouses) pretty much universally abhored by Christians?

Oh, and for the record...
I know the vast majority of mormons aren't polygamists. But, as far as I know, they're the only people (at least in name) that have a small sect that practices it.

As far as i know the only place in the Bible that refers to monogamy is Timothy, and that refers only to overseers not the general population. Monogamy was a pagan Greek and Roman tradition. I suppose when Constantine and the Romans took over control of Christianity they stuck with that pagan tradition.

It amazes me in this age of reasoning, intellect, and fast access of quality information that people still believe that polygamy is endorsed by the Mormon Church!

President Wilford Woodruff of the Church proclaimed to the world that polygamy was no longer sanctioned and allowed by the membership. Any person violating this new law of the land would be immediately excommunicated.

The proclamation was voted unanimously in the General Conference of October 1890.

Those found guilty of practicing plural marriage in the U.S.A. are subject to federal and state prosecution with resultant fines and jail time--provided certain law enforcement agencies in the remote areas of the southwest will do it.

Mormons do NOT endorse polygamy. They did up until 1890, at which point they discontinued the practise. For more info on polygamy within Christianity, check out the below source...

Yes, the mainstream Christian churches do not support or believe in polygamy. Its also against the law. I know its confusing, but all mormons do not support it either.

Mormons are for it. All other Christin religions I know about are against it. Many people in the Bible had multiple wives including Abraham, King David and all the kings of Judea. OO

Studies such as the Kinsey report, and Polls by Barna show it is widely practiced by Christians, just kept quiet about.

from a christian perspective, yes...Because the bible clearly said "One man to One wife"...secondly, when God created humans, He gave Adam one wife from His ribs, not multiple wives.

I hope this helps...God bless.
