My husband was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis is Sept of 05'. We have tried Rebif and other drugs, liver unable to handle them.
Alternative treatment is that he gets admited to the hospital for 3 days to get three 1,000mg doses of prednisone IV. Afterwards he is not lower the doesage over time at home with pill form. Usually we get a perscrip for him to follow up with 80mg a day for 7 days then 40mg for 3 days, then 20mg for 3 days, then 10mg for 3 days, then 5mg for 5 days. This past time he was given a perscrip for 200mg(10 pills) once daily for a week, then 100mg(5 pills) for 4 days, then 80mg every other day for 30 days(15 days of pills). I dont understand the big difference and why they would give him so many pills. The perscribing doc was a hospital doc, and when I called his nurologist he said I should change the dose to 200mg, skip a day, 100mg, skip, 50 mg, skip, 35mg, skip, 5mg... What have your dosages been? Any help would be apreciated.

sorry to hear you husband has MS. I too, was diagnosed with relasping/remitting MS in 2004 and have been taking Copaxone daily injection shots. At first I felt like it wasn't working as I had had relaspes, but my neurologist really didn't want me to try something else as he said in the last MRI not many lesions on the brain. Does your husband has remitting or progressive MS? Unfortunately all the medicines we take for MS isn't really solving the problems, and it seems like the doctors just want to hand out prescriptions and be done with that. That is how I perceive for me in my area anyways. However, the prescribing doctor told your husband to take that doseage but the neurologist said to dose 200 mg, I would strongly recommend doing what the neurologist said as he is trained in MS but the prescribing doctor isn't. I always will go with what a neurologist will tell me. As far as taking other meds, I tried that and the meds just seem to make me feel like I am sleepwalking. I'm tired enough don't want to make myself any more tired. I would strongly recommend if your neurologist told you to do the doseage and you or your husband is confused about that, you can always call a different neurologist to get another opinion. I have done that as well. It's not that I don't trust my neurologist, but thought getting another opinion would ease my mind. Another possible way to find out information is to go to www.mschaptersociety.com and start from there and get some answers. I wish I could give you better answers, but, I believe asking as many doctors as possible just to make sure things go well and that your husband is comfortable with what he has to take. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your husband. Good luck.

Low dose Neltrexon, IVIG, Minocycline, Copaxone. Steroids have hurt my stomach (dexamethasone). I have tried solumidrol by IV and it bypasses the stomach. The doctor I see run the MS treatment center in CT. He's on the cutting edge of MS treatment. Mention some of these drugs to your Neurologist. Make sure he takes calcium when taking steroids. If you have any more questions, I think you can get me through my yahoo 360. I'm not sure, I just set it up; I don't know how it works yet.
