hi All

Just bought myself an ipod but now need to update my windows version on my pc from ME to 2000 or XP. As my pc is oldish would i be right in thinking its probably a better idead to get 2000 and put that on rather than the memory hungry XP?

XP and 2000 are the same!
the only difference is system restore and visual effects on Win XP.
Try Win XP but after installation, right click on your My Computer icon then choose: Properties>Advanced>Performance
and set it to best performance option.
Good luck

You can buy a new desktop (tower only) at many retail stores for around $400. (Look for the COMPAQ at STAPLES) If your computer came with Windows ME or 98, you would have to spend $200 for more RAM. Then you would spend more that $100 for Windows XP. So why invest more in an old CLUNKER when a little bit more money will get NEW and AWESOME. You will absolutely REGRET wasting money on the old rig. It must be about 6 years old now, and it may fail by it's 7th or 8th birthday anyway.

You see, if you got WIndows 2000 or Windows XP, I would recommend getting 512MB or more at this point. You see, Windows XP never worked very well with just 128MB, so most people that got Windows XP, ended up expanding their RAM.

Keep in mind, however, that floppy disk drives do not come with new computers. (they are obsolete) If you only have a few docuements, you can Email them to yourself and read them on the new computer. OR, made a CD. OR, remove your hard drive and install it in the New computer.

You see, your old computer might only have a couple of USB ports. It will always run SLOW. Spending $300 now, to last just 3 years (at most) is foolish, when you can spend $400 for a new computer that will last 7 or 8 years.

That $400 new computer has a new CD burner, new HUGE hard drive, new and MORE memory, new software with Windows XP and is MUCH faster. You will be much happier.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Well, my suggestion would be 2000. Because if you do not even know the difference (Feature wise) between Windows 2000 and XP, then why use Windows XP? As Windows 2000 can be faster on an older machine due to less system usage such as RAM and processor power.

XP. 2000 has a greater overhead than XP. In otherwords it uses more of the PCs resources. It also takes far loger to boot up and it was never really designed to be used as a home desktop PC. XP will run with 128Mv Ram better than 2000 with 128Mb. also in XP you can turn off all the funny xp menus and special effect to make it run quicker on an old system. Id def go for XP and slap in a min of 256Mb Ram. (512 better) I ve run XP on a 450Mhz PII before and it runs ok.

I would check with the Yahoo! tech support team @ 1.866.722.3425 for the most sound advice but, using personal experience, we went from 2000 to XP on an old computer we had. It worked well until the hard drive literally "died". What a mess when that happens!

I would say if your computer meets the minimum requirements for XP that will be your best. You will be able to upgrade from ME without reformatting.I'm still using 2000 pro on mine.It is still supported by windows for updates but some new software wants XP only.

Well this depends on what kind of system you have on your Pc. If your Pc has 1.6ghz proccessor and 512mb or 10124mb of Ram, then probably istall XP. but if your configuration is lower than this than i recemend you to install 2000. it will be easyer to run, faster and you dont have to fac monye trying to upgrade your pc or get a new one.....

2000 is no longer supported by Microsoft, so if any new bugs appear they will not patch them.

Go for XP, at least MS is still patching that.

If your computer is really old just buy a new one, Vista is not that far away.

How old is your computer? and are you sure your IPOD will connect to it?
You can try Windows 2k but honestly think you should get a newer comp.
