Keep the negatives - just incase you change your mind. Start the process as though you were judging them for an award... select 20 of your your favourites and put them aside. Then seriously think about sitting down with friends or family or just calling them on the phone and tell them you have heaps of photos that you cant find the room for and would they like some (assuming that they are relevant to those people) its a good way to reminisce the good times as well as loose some of the photos. Then I would re-sort them for the 20 or so absolute worst can do without photos and burn them. There will still most likely be a lot left so talk to one of the younger computer literate members of your family about getting them copied to a disc or otherwise check the phone book as there are lots of businesses around that scan photos and save them to a disc etc. If you have a computer you could then get rid of all except your favourites and just reprint the others as and when you felt like it.

No relations to pass them on to? there must be someone you could pass small amounts to,
the only alternative I can see is make some photo albums make a history of your life to pass on to relations.
Also if you go through each one you will find some that you dont' even know why you kept cause the picture was too dark, too light, unknown people etc. If you have a friend with a fireplace you could take that bag and just burn them that way nobody else will mess with them.
You could make a collage for the wall of favorite photos but I wouldn't just toss them in the trash for someone else to find. You could use a shredder that way they won't look like photos anymore.
Hope that helps!

Have someone who cares Put them onto CDs. You can fit alot on one disc. and you can store them so much easier. Plus if you ever or someone else wants a copy they just go to a computer and print a copy. or take it to a photo shop and they will print for you.
I am only 32 and already share this problem . I am not good with computers yet but my husband is helping me.
Ask for help somepeople actually love these types of projects.

Offer them to family members. If that isn't viable, some antique/retro shops might be interseted in them if they are from the early '70s or before. I have a friend who is an artist and he has used old photgraphs in some of his mixed media works.

take a couple of days, and write the names of whom ever is in them. seperate into stacks of who they can go to. if you have some with your children in them, give each child their own. if aunt sue is in them, but aunt sue isn't "here" any more, then maybe her children would like to have them. remember, years ago, we didn't always have "doubles", or memory cards. if there are pictures with several family members in it, then scan them, and make everyone a copy. if this is tooo much. scan them all, make a disc, and give everyone a copy, then, trash the pictures.
when my great grandmother died (she was one of 13 children) we had NO idea of what to do with all of her photos, so, the photo disc was the best idea we came up with~~~
good luck!, and hopefully your family will pay attention to your hard work!

You have got to sort them out before you dispose of them. Make sure you keep some. I would burn the rest but make sure you are completely ready to do this. Save the negatives if you have them as they will take up less room

Maybe sort through them. Pass down some to family members. Or see if you have a family member that can keep them at their house.

what i did with all of my extra photos is get a really big picture frame and cut the pictures to kind of blend with each other and just make one big collage. you dont have to get rid of your memories just put them all together on a wall!
