When Cuba abandons Communisim - which I think will happen once Fidel Castro croaks - then the US may consider lifting the sanctions. Until then, the sanctions will remain.

For those who don't think that Cuba is a threat to us, I suggest you do some reading on the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Cuba is less than 90 miles away, and it would be absolutely no problem for a nation with a strong military back by a government with a strong economy to stage an attack or invasion across that narrow stretch of ocean.

Some of the people on this site are entirely too ignorant to ever open their mouths.

Just reading the answers above and seeing liberals trying to blame Republicans for the embargo is enough to make me laugh. These people are absolutely ridiculous.

Kennedy (Democrat) initiated the largest part of the restrictions against Cuba and these restrictions were increased by Clinton (another Democrat).

And remember, although the other countries listed above are indeed Communist, they never sat on our doorstep with Soviet missiles pointed at us.

To answer the question, it does seem to be a bit of a double standard. It began in most part because of Cuba's ties to the USSR during the Cold War, but that clearly is no longer an issue. Many believe that the reason we still hold restrictions against them is to not give Communism a foothold in this part of the world so as to not allow its influence in Central and South American countries.

you know, I've often wondered about this. What a misguided policy. I mean, can you imagine CUBA being any sort of danger to us? All this embargo does is hurt the people from that country. How humanitarian! Hopefully, the next President will have the wisdom to understand that good things could happen for both countries if this embargo is lifted. I think it has not been lifted because we want to show how strong we are, and bullying tactics seem to be what our foreign policy is based on.

Look, it's only symbolic. Cuba can buy anything it wants from any nation on the face of the Earth, except the United States, and even here there's a loophole. Cuba can buy all the food and medicine it wants from the United States. There's only one catch, they have to pay for it with cash, no taxpayer backed loans from The Export-Import Bank.

The embargo will be lifted after they reform their political system.

We have the right to trade with any nation we choose to - and also the right to refuse to have anything to do to support an oppressive totalitarian government run by a brutal dictator.

The expatriate Cubans in South Flordia have loads of political clout. Convince them to change strategy and the US government will drop the embargo.

Until the rabid Miami-Cuban exiles in South Florida stop dictating policy to the entire country, it would appear that the embargo will continue. It will require a bipartisan effort to end this flawed policy, or at least a Democratic President, though Clinton failed to resolve this problem
