Its best to travel yourself if you know the place well or you could have a guide from a travel agency. at least thats how i prefer since i didnt like the last holiday i had from italy, swiss and france with a TOUR. and i did not have really enough time to check out things especially the eiffel tower, its like were on top for only 5 minutes then we came down. we didnt even have time to buy stuff...

For Rome it is best to have a travel guide. Otherwise, you will never be able to maneuver Rome and the Vatican. There is so much to see there. It's awesome.
For Paris, you can do it on your own. If you have the time, you can take the Seine River Cruise. You can catch it up the street from the Eiffel Tower. It takes you past the Notre Dame Cathedral. Then you can make arrangements to see the rest of the city. Definitely stop for a crepe.
Each city is different. Rome is full of history and architecture. I have never seen so much in my life and I have been to many different countries. Rome is everything you can imagine it to be. If you have time, Venice is great too. Expensive food but the markets are great.
Have fun!

If it's your first time to Europe, a group can make it easy.... your hotel is all arranged and they will show you around. On the other hand, you have the restriction of having to stay with the group itinerary. Some people like this security.
We have always liked traveling on our own. It's easy to find hotels and get around on your own all over Europe, and you can have the flexibility to go where you want, stay as long as you want and meet friendly locals.
It's fun to read about a place that gets your imagination fired up, then dream about it and make plans, then finally get there. Travel is fun and relaxing and exciting and a great education all rolled into one. Here are our thoughts on how to plan a great trip: http://www.mousetourstravels.com/custom-tour.html and http://www.mousetourstravels.com/custom-tour-planning-list.html
Happy travels--even if you don't travel the world... just remember that life is a journey... embrace and enjoy it!!

It all depends on what you want
I went on a Contiki tour last summer to Europe and it was amazing! I met so many incredible people and got to see so much n 2 weeks. We visited London, Paris, Florence, Pisa, Venice, Rome, Switzerland, and Austria.
Tours are a lot of fun and I would recommend going on a Contiki, especially if it's your first time in Europe.
