I agree. How can not believing in GOD and still have a purpose to fill? It like saying I am here by accident and I was meant to be here.
It just does not make sense.

You have to be clear about whether he is Agnostic or Atheist. Agnostics are uncertain and believe there might be a god, but there also might not be. Basically they don't really believe anything.

Atheists firmly believe that there is no God.

A lot of atheists do actually have some kind of spirituality, they just don't like to call it god - Many people hate the idea of god, but if you say there is a kind of consciousness that spreads through the whole world and all the world is a part of it, they will often agree (not always but its an example)

It is possible to believe that your life has purpose, without understanding or wanting to understand why it has that purpose.

They also tend to prefer to ignore the question of what happens to you after you die. To talk to them it is better to focus on what you can agree on - love, happiness, being good etc.

Whaaa?! I just read the previous answer. How sad!!

I believe that we make our own 'heaven' or 'hell' right here and right now! I choose to enjoy life as much as I can. Sunny days, time with my family, a decent cup of coffee, a meal with friends. What blessings (and I'm an atheist!).

Do I need a better purpose than to enjoy living and share my enjoyment with others? Just because I don't believe someone else has given my life a purpose doesn't mean I can't chose one for myself.

Please don't be quite so arrogant Immortal! Just because someone doesn't share your beliefs doesn't make them 'confused'!

I'm really pleased you have found a purpose in your life and the support of a religion. But that doesn't mean you need to assume other people are somehow lacking something if they haven't got those things.

And as for your previous question - the fact that I'm going to die and no longer exist gives me an incentive to do everything I want to do now rather than wasting my life away waiting to go to heaven!

Thank you for your questions!

Why do we need a purpose? Isn't existing purposeful enough? Hey, if you want to find another meaning to your insignificant life, then by all means do so. On the grand scale, it's a futile attempt.

You don't need a purpose, you just give yourself one.

Personally, I believe I am reincarnated. Makes so much more sense than heaven when you think about it

I think purpose is a frustrating word to use in relation to life. It causes problems, and the search for "purpose" has been behind most religion. Try to think of things another way: why should there be a purpose beyond what you come up with yourself? My purpose in life is just to live and enjoy, look after my wife and kid, and experience as much joy as possible. I prefer to be without religion of any kind, as it brings ignorance, negativity and division.

My purpose in life is to live. I don't worry about the non existence that death is. Life by it self has meanings, to breed, to make sure the offspring survives and to enjoy the experience of existence.

Plants and animals don't believe in God or heaven (at least that we know of) still their lives serves a purpose. Why should humans be any different?

Agnostics say that they don't know if there is a God or not, and say you can't know. I think you are talking about atheists (I'm an atheist). Well, as far as I'm concerned, I think we are just animals, so our purpose is to procreate (I don't want to have kids, though). We don't believe we are on earth for a reason, actually. We are here by chance, that's all. It doesn't depress me, you know. But because we have a brain, I think it's our duty to make life as good as possible (like not killing people, less poverty, etc.).

The fact you can believe you are here for a purpose does not in any way state that purpose must be one set for you by another. It is entirely possible to set your own purpose in life.

"he is clearly confused"???!!

forcing YOUR beliefs on this person won't help. if, as you said, he believes there is a purpose to his life, that's a step in the religious direction. if you press too hard, they'll never convert.
try setting a good example of faith and compassion, encouraging him to "at least try" to pray a little bit. if your god is as real as you claim, then surely god is able to manifest it's own presence.
arguing/debating changes nobody.

Im not sure what the correct "term" is for what i belive, but this is what i believe...

I believe that our spirits are in "hell" at this very moment... and when whe die we are sent to "heaven" in the fact that our spirits are released from our bodies! (our spirits arent confined to a physical body anymore, and are therefore FREED)

Call it Atheist, call it Agnostic...call it what you want, but thats what i believe!

(It all makes sense to me like that because thats how some people can "communicate with the dead"... they have figured out or developed a way to allow their spirits to speak to spirits on the other side)

And im not here to force my views and beliefs on other people, this is just my opinion...so please dont reply to me telling me that i need God to save me etc etc because this is just my personal opinion!

So you need to make stuff up just to think your life has a purpose? That is sad.
