The church is, and probably always will be, about power and money.

Christianity was spread through the Roman Empire (hence the Western World) because the Emperor found it a convenient vehicle for instilling obediance.

The Catholic Church ran all the major businesses in the Dark Ages and Middle Ages. It also had enormous political infighting (several pope's at one stage) and fought countless bloody religious wars (it tended to lose against Islam).

To ensure its place it kept religious teachings in a language that common people could not understand, and hijacked social traditions like marriage (which was not a Christian arrangement) to ensure a central role in governing birth, life and death of everyone.

By doing so the Church became by far the richest and most powerful organisation on Earth. England had to split with the Catholic Church to make any sort of independent progress. It has also been the most bloodthirsty organisation in human history in order to cement its power.

Not nice is it.

Because many people own more than one Bible, and have never read one of them.
If they are to receive God's word, someone is going to have to tell it to them.
The pastor is trained to understand the meaning of the scriptures, and is skilled in providing application, thus helping the believer to understand how to apply the Bible in their life.

It gives you a convenient place to offer up your money. The Divine is everywhere and too vast to be contained within the walls of a building. Enjoy your spirituality.
