Jihad is also used in the meaning of struggle for or defence of Islam, the holy war.
Why do Muslims indulge in Jihad?
Because the founder of Islam, Mohammad commanded the Muslims to convert the whole world to Islam on the pain of death.
Muster against them all the men and cavalry at your disposal so that you can strike terror into the enemies of Allah and of the believers and others beside them who may be unknown to you, though Allah knows them. And remember whatever you spend for the cause of Allah shall be repaid to you. You shall not be wronged. „
—Qur'an, 8:60

Jihad means struggle, not war. Muhammad said that the supreme Jihad is with the self.
Crazed militants can always use their texts as an excuse. Think of the Crusades when Christians conveniently ignored all the things in the Bible that advocate peace. It's a direct contradiction to Jesus' teachings and behaviour.
"Purification" is also a word that could be used to mean killing off anyone who disagrees, or simply making something better and clean.
You can't judge a religion by its most extreme members.

The Criminal Terrorists have used their own opinion and created new interpretations, while clearly ALL the Scholars schooled in Islamic Studies - specifically Fiqh (Jurisprudence - theory of Law) have issued many Fatwa's agaisnt them. They have come from the American Scholars of Fiqh, as well as the Saudi Grand Mufti! The highest authority on matters pertaining to Islamic Jurisprudence. Please realize the Terrorist Criminals are OUR ENEMY MUCH MORE because they are attacking the religion from the inside. They have ruined the image of Islam and just carry out many murders (these deeds will count against them on the Day of Judgment). I will provide you a link with a Religious Verdict explaining why according to Islam Law suicide bombing and terrorism is FORBIDDEN with proofs.

On this site a Knowledgable Scholar refutes the claims of the Deviant Al-Qaeda supporting sect with proofs. He explains everything, including who are the only people who can call for Jihad. It cannot be a soldier or a scholar even, it has to be a head of state. Since there is no Caliphate. Please read it, I think you will find it enlightening as to why 99% of Muslims ARE NOT Terrorists Criminals.
Peace Be With You

It's because that's what it is.
Islam and Muslims aren't responsible for whatever Al-Qaeda says and does. If Al-Qaeda, an organization of barely 100,000 members, says that Jihad means Holy War, that's all them. The other 2 billion+ Muslims have nothing to do with them.

Because that is what Jihad, Holy War means. The struggle within. Many people twist the Bible and the Quran to suit thier own purposes!

Why are you ignorant? Perhaps you do too much rambling and not enough listening. Jihad means struggle, it can be a spiritual struggle or a military struggle or any other type of struggle.

It is because the Qu'ran is subject to interpretation.
Taken out of context, it sounds like it supports violence against all infidels.
I wish I could find a Qu'ran in English CD that would let me search for certain words like I can with the Bible.
