At the shaboos table you would normally have the blessiung over the wine first - if you need more info on that then let me know

You would then wash your hands (you and all the guests) first and make the relevant blessing (transliterated below and basically meaning ...As god has commanded we make a blessing over the washing of the hands (having in mind the bread you are about to eat)

Baruch Ata Adonai Eloehinu melech Ha' olam Asher Kideshanu be'Mitzvotav Vertzevanu Al Netilat Yadaim

Then the Cahllah (up to now covered with a cloth) are uncovered (there should be 2 of them, size does not matter they just need to be whole and large enough to give everyone a peice) and the following blessing made

Baruch ata adonai elohenu melech ha'olam Hamotzei lechem min ha'aretz

Then sprinkle with salt and either cut in to peices or "tear" apart and give everyone a peice.

If you need any more information on the customs then let me know

It is kept covered before the reciting of the Hamotzi then it is either cut or "ripped", salted and then everyone takes a piece (shouldn't be handed to you) and then at least one bite is taken. Usually there is no talking between the washing of the hands and the taking of a bite.

some do not cut the bread but pass it along whole and you 'rip' a piece off. that is how they did it in days of yore.... but most probably slice it up w/a knife.
