Mileage is one thing, travel time is another. It all really depends upon which part of LA you are leaving from. From downtown LA, Palm Springs is 106 miles, and San Diego is 120. However, traffic all depends on when you go. Friday afternoon is the heaviest traffic, and it will take you much longer to get there. A 4-hour trip from LA to SD is not uncommon. Once again, it depends on which freeway you take, where you are coming from, what day of the week it is, and time of day. If traffic is a major concern, I would go to PS, since traffic usually breaks up when you get past San Bernardino, or Beaumont at the worst. On a SD trip, you can see traffic all the way to SD. Tip: Do you know why they call it the 405 freeway? Because you go 4 o' 5 MPH, and it takes 4 o' 5 hours to get where you're going.
On the way back, Sunday afternoons can be very slow from SD, especially holiday weekends.
Hope this helps!

For a short break, Las Vegas is a good idea and -if you can find a reasonable airfare- you get all the sun you want, plus lots of shows etc. Else, go for Calistoga. San Diego is a wonderful city and it's ideal for a longer summer vacation. Highly recommended.

When you're driving in CA, mileage is rarely an accurate measure of time to get somewhere because of the horrendous traffic...
On a good day, it will take about 2 -1/2 hours to get to either place from Palm Springs...
On a bad day, who knows??? Once it took me about 4 hours to get to L.A. from P.S. because of traffic.

Los Angeles to Palm Springs is less than 200kms (presumably you are talking about Palm Springs California because there are others!)
Go to google and search for via michelin, best map website around
In fact I just checked and it's 175 kms and they reckon around two hours - try the following web page
