I'm sensitive to any medicine. No matter what it is, it makes me drowsy. I have to take care of a four year old today and I have to be alert, but this cough is killing me.

Most homemade cough syrups will help decrease discomfort, but won't stop the coughing reflex like over the counter cough syrups. A few home remedies for cough/ sore throat:
1. Simmer one lemon until it is soft. Then blend or food process it whole, with the water and add honey to taste.
2. Chop 1 Tablespoon per cup of water and boil gently for 5-10 minutes. Do not strain. Add honey and drink while still warm.
3. Teas: slippery elm or marshmallow tea are also excellent for soothing itchy throats.
If you have access to a health food store, the homeopathic cough syrup Chestal by Boiron seems to work well for most people without adverse effects.

Avoid foods containing milk or dairy products. Try some caffeine free herbal tea. You could also get some sugar free pectin drops from a local pharmacy to suck on. They don't contain any meds and they are healthier than lifesavers 'cause there is no sugar.

Also try zinc and ecinesia drops. They're yummy !!!!

If you have time, stand in a hot steamy shower. Also, drink PLENTY of water. It will help loosen the congestion and cause you to spit it up.
