I'm always looking for natural & inexpensive ways to ward-off what could be a sinus infection. I usually get out the heating pad and cover my eyes with it. I always thought the heat would "kill" any bacteria, etc. and it seems to relieve the pressure. The other day, someone suggested using a cold compress to "shrink" the sinuses. Does anyone know which is actually better?

With your sinuses, always go with steamy, warm compresses.
You will find comfort. Cold will do nothing to help the pain & discomfort.
Afrin nasal spray opens up the sinus passages but can only be safely used for 3 days. After that it actually does more harm than good.
If you have a sinus infection though, you will need antibiotics to get rid of the infection. Nothing will "kill" the infection but antibiotics.
If you have chronic, severe sinus infections, you may even find that sinus surgery is the way to go. Talk with your doctor.

This is gross but it really works. Put some salt in a glass of warm (not hot water). Stand over the sink and plug one nostril and inhale the salt water slowly, repeat on the other side.
I would use cold instead of hot because bacteria thrives in warm places.

Using steam inhalation would help loosen nasal congestion better than external heat. Using a menthol/eucalyptus oil or peppermint oil will help make it more effective and enjoyable
You could also try using saline nasal sprays

Heat usually works for me. You can't shrink your sinuses.
