"baked" is past tense.
they are baked before they get into the can. Its part of the food processing.
If it refered to your action in the kitchen they would be called "baking beans". But they are called "Baked" because they have been baked before you get them.
Raw beans are rock hard. baking them in the food processing plant breaks the starch and so makes them soft

Originally, haricot beans were made into a dish called "boston baked beans" a lovely dish made by baking beans all day with molasses, treacle and spices.
Then along came Heinz. They added an insipid tomato and sugar based sauce, put them in a can and called them baked beans.
We in the UK have been hoodwinked into thinking that this is the original recipe!

Most commercial tinned baked beans such as Heinz are made from navy beans, a variety of Phaseolus vulgaris, and sold in a sauce. In the United Kingdom, tomato sauce is most commonly used. Tinned baked beans are often mistakenly thought of as haricot beans (for example, but Heinz describes their product as "Canadian navy beans", which are very similar to haricots but slightly larger. Also, baked beans should not be confused with Pork and Beans which are also navy beans in tomato sauce, but are not sweetened with brown sugar or flavored with onions like baked beans.
Traditional baked beans are first boiled, then transferred to an oven pot and seasoned with molasses, onion, dry mustard, brown sugar and/or other seasonings accordint to the tastes of the cook.

Baked beans were...well, originally baked. In a cast iron dutch oven on low low heat for hours and hours. It's entirely preferable, if you wanna give it a try you won't be disappointed!

...it's just easier to say.
