I have a British visa. I'll travel to northern island. Would that be a problem to cross the border to Ireland

I need Irish visa to enter the country but can I get away with it if Ijust cross the border from Northern Ireland to R. of Ireland for a few hours. Any border checks?

It depends on your nationality. A British Visa is only valid in Northern Ireland (and the mainland of course), as the Irish Republic is a different country. You can read the Republic's Visa requirements on its U.S. Embassy page at:

Here, you will find a list of nationalities that do NOT require visas. If your nationality is not there, you WILL need to get one, regardless of border checks between the North and the Republic. You risk being deported, say, if you get involved in a traffic accident, and then you would not be allowed back.

It's impossible to say if there will be border checks - they are quite intermittent. If you are determined to go, get a visa! Without it, you are taking a big risk or may have to skip the experience.

PS Taff, you need to go check in an Atlas! N. Ireland is governed by the UK and the rest of Ireland is the Republic, governed from Dublin. Although everyone is aware of the dispute over Northern Ireland, currently this is the political structure.

In normal times, there is no problem: but if there is a higher state of alert for some reason, you may be delayed by some mandatory procedures of special check-ups. Please confirm with some authentic govt security office, or good travel agency, before you set out.
