when you massage her, before you do so...put a warm towel around her neck...you can do this by putting a wet towel in the microwave, try not burn her...this will be use as warm compressions around her neck to release any tension, to relax the muscles. Have her face down and relax and around that area where the discomfort is...try frictioning the area with your thumb..gentle not to hard...it is called the "occipital area", lots of muscles connects here and at times this can cause headaches.
Have her stretch her neck too...if is too painful you can do it for her by holding her head and bringing it to the side...heres a site where you can find the way to stretch the neck.
Have her see a massage therapist.
Good luck and feel better ^i^♥♥

Sounds like tension since it helped with a massage. It's really very thoughtful of you to be so concerned. She is lucky to have you. Ice can be very helpful, since it's not a new injury she can alternate ice and heat. If the pain worsens over time she should see a doctor, they can give muscle relaxers etc to help with the discomfort.
