Subduction causes earthquakes and the elimination of part of the crust. A subduction zone is where one tectonic plate slips beneath another, and earthquakes at subduction faults take place much deeper inside the Earth than other quakes. The devastating Indian Ocean tsunami on December 26, 2004, was causes by an earthquake on a subduction fault. In addition, the entire seafloor is gradually replaced by subduction, in combination with the formation of new crust at mid-ocean ridges. None of the rock in the seabed is more than 200 million years old, even though the Earth itself is 4.5 billion years old.
