A nephew is the son of your brother or sister, while a niece is the daughter of your brother or sister. The difference is the gender, but besides that, I do not think that in a society free from sexism, there will be major difference in the treatment of both of them.

This is a easy one
Nephew : your brother or sister's son
Niece : your brother or sister's daughter
So the only difference in the terms is the gender of the child.

Your previous answerer's have explained well, so how about a niece/nephew joke to lighten the day?
An Aggie's wife had a baby girl. She named the baby girl Denise. Two years later, she had little boy. She asked her husband, "What should we name Denise's baby brother?" The Aggie husband thought for a minute and answered, "How about DeNephew!"
