I understand that plants have either one or two seed leaves. This plant had three and at each branch it went three ways instead of the normal two. I did not keep any of the seeds.

It's rare but not unheard of. Plants have developmental abnormalities just like any other organism. Four leaf clovers and two headed cows are other examples.

This does sound very unusual. Pity you did not keep seeds but they probably would have been normal.
