Cutting is not a personality disorder, it is a symptom of severe depression. And it can become an addiction just like any substance can be. For those addicted to it they are addicted to the rush of endorphins, the natural high that the pain of cutting induces. BUT, usually someone cuts because it is a pain they control. The more out of control they feel, the more they cut. Some do it because they feel so numbed by their lives that it is the only way that they can feel anything, feel alive. And yes some do it for attention or as a cry for help.

Instead of trying to judge people and diagnose them with your less than extensive medical background why not try to understand? Instead of picking on her either leave her be or be helpful.

I've just stalked all your questions and answers and see that you describe yourself as a health professional.

If this is to be believed, I am shocked & surprised that you don't have access to much more reliable sources of information on symptoms of depression and anxiety than asking about it here!

.......And disgusted that you would risk being the possible cause of any more anxiety and negative feeling for the person in question.

I'd expect a display of more "professionalism" from someone that describes themselves as a "health professional".

she is a "shadow" of a girl. She is just having some temporary problems with depression. I think she is a fine person and will someday (soon) deal with this stuff and have a really happy and fantastic life.

She could use a friend right now. Maybe you?

What's happening is SOME sort of personality disorder. Doesn't mean borderline though.

The alternative would be a poor, poor emo kid with rich, rich parents. =\

she is very mentally ill and is seeking answers probably in the best way she knows how at the time. obviously young with little understanding of how to get treatment and in denial of the possibility of having a mental illness. past history of sexual abuse which is a leading factor of BPD.
people that cut themselves do it so they don't kill themselves. they are overwhelmed by emotional pain and the cutting is the only way to get the relief from the pain that is so difficult to talk about.

never mind her!
We are all humans, but still different from one another!
Some people have issues, and we try our best to help them, if they don't change to the better its their problem!
