I don't think it was necessarily a threat but he was telling you if he acted like you were (all the time or that particular time) then he would get his butt whipped. Probably when he was growing up he got whipped for being bad instead of grounded or getting their stuff taken away. I grew up getting either switched or belted, not all the time only when I deserved it. I think grounding, for most kids doesn't work, sometimes it does. Their is a line between abuse and discipline. So many people cry abuse, but would they rather have someone go from breaking the rules as a child to breaking the law as an adult or upstanding citizens. Their are some who will argue with me but look at it this way, 50 yrs ago when that was common discipline we didn't have half as much crime, I'm not saying that's the only reason but it's part.

Just that in the olden days, discipline was a lot harsher than it is now, for example your dad probably got a lash of a belt if he was naughty whereas if he were to do that to you now, you'd call the cops and he'd get arrested for child abuse! Nowadays instead of being physically punished, children just have luxuries taken away, ie being grounded, having their playstation taken away for a week. Kids these days don't know how easy they've got it (and i'm only 23!!)

A lot of times it's an idle threat made to pull you into line, but if it happens it's abuse pure and simple.

A warning. My dad has said something like that to me. Doesn't mean he doesn't love me. He isn't my real dad either. He is my adoption father.

I think he was mad at you and would have liked to slap you up on your head but didn't and that is all that matters. Watch yourself.

Angry with you for some mistake on your part. Don't take it so harshly and try to accomodate.
