I'm looking for Canon models at or around this price range - $800. Is this model considerably better and worth the money than the XT EOS 350D's? Any advice for an amateur?

Yes it is. It's the update to the 350D, with some nice and much improved features. It would be perfect as a first time DSLR.
However, all reviews say the kit lens is cheap & disappointing. So, you should factor in the cost of a much better lens either straight away (you can buy the body only)...or sometime in the future.

That's a good Digital SLR camera, overall. Good choice. If money's an issue, you could really get by with the 8MP version of that Rebel. That's more the standard beginner digital SLR camera.
