Go into a Jewellers that sells second hand rings. You should get the best price there, especially if you are willing to put in part exchange for something else.

I think that Ebay would be your best option because you will have a much bigger audience than a local paper. You could set a reserve on the ring so that it wont fetch less than what you've been offered, but it wont sell if you're unrealistic.
The problem is that you wont get the money back that he paid for it, but on the brighter side, he paid for it, not you, so you'll still be £300 better of for selling it quickly.
You could try a dealer in jewellery, they might offer you more, but at the end of the day, all they will be interested in is their profit margins.

Auction is probably best as you are generally selling to the 'end user' so no one else to make a profit on the price (like a jeweller shop) You could try a big auction house for an estimate (Christies. Phillips or Sothebys) you could e-mail them with a picture for a rough idea (though much better to take in person - all these places have regional sales, look on yell.com) then you'll have an idea and can either sell it via them or use that figure or thereabouts as your reserve price on ebay

THIS is one possible solution for you to think about? if youre not getting the price you think its worth, why not go to a jewelers, have the ring melted down, which some jewelers will do, and either have another ring made out of it, a charm bracelet, ear-rings anything,at least youre still getting/keeping the value of the ring, but adorning it in a different way? failing that give it back to him, and move on, moneys not everything as you know, else you wouldnt be parting with an engagement ring? one more thing,if the ring was worth say £80.00-£100.00 what would you do then, thrown it back at him no doubt??

I would reconsider ebay if I were you. Jewellery seems to go pretty well there. You can always set a reserve on it.
Sorry to here things didn't work out how you planned.

Any of the known public sale web pages. in case you reside in a city that has an public sale abode (like Bonham & Butterfields), they could be drawn to which includes your jewelry of their catalog auctions.

Run an add in the Newspaper and add to the price so you will have leadway in the buyer as to what they want to pay. Say you want a $1000.00 dollars, ask 1500.00 and you can drop to what you want to and the buyer will think that they have gotten a deal from you and then you will get what you wanted in the first place.
