Here is a suggestion, go wherever you go for cheap fabric, pick something you like in a cotton - polyester blend. (My place is Walmart.) Buy some spray adhesive there also. Attach new fabric to cover the old.

Another cheap way to do it. Spray paint. I am not kidding. My mom spray paints all kinds of fabric. It is a little tacky, but will change the color, right now. And you said you will be getting rid of them as soon as you can afford better. Besides the paint will add to the room darkening properties of the blinds.

One last suggestion. Leave the blinds. Add another layer of window covering. Window rods are can be cheap. (Try ikea) The draped scarves do not have to be expensive either. Even another fabric choice from good old walmart, Just draped and not sewn can count as a scarf.

Try creative options, if they do not work, just save faster for what you really want.

I second the RIT dye, but I would soak them in a tub. My sister soaked her plastic mini blinds in the tub to clean them and it didn't damage any of the mechinisms to open and shut. I'd do one as a test before you do them all...
