here is an easy recipe for it,,

Ingredients for Water Cake
1 cup boiling water
1 cup sugar
½ cup vegetable shortening
1 egg
¼ cup chopped candied
Citron peel
1 cup sultana raisins
2½ cups flour
½ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon grated nutmeg
½ teaspoon lemon extract
Instructions
Put vegetable shortening and sugar into basin, pour boiling water over them; let stand till cold, then add egg well beaten, sift in flour, salt, baking powder, and nutmeg, add peel, raisins, and lemon extract, and mix well.
Turn into greased and floured small square tin and bake in moderate oven half hour.
Cool and cover with boiled frosting.
Sufficient for one small cake.

The BBC website is really good for finding out information about shows. Depending on what show it was, try looking at their website and tracking down the recipe. For programmes like Ready Steady Cook, there is an archive of recipes from previous shows - you may find something similar for water cake (although I have never heard of it!). Good luck.

COLD WATER CAKE


ngredients:
one and one-half cups of sugar

one-quarter cup of butter

two and one-half cups of flour

two eggs

one cup of water

two teaspoons of baking powder

Flavor with vanilla or lemon.
Longest established in Marion--Jennie Thomas, milliner

ESTHER HILK'S WATER CAKE

4 egg yolks
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 tbsp. cold water
1 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 c. cake flour, sifted
1/2 c. boiling water

Butter and flour cookie sheet or cake pan. Set oven at 350 degrees. Combine sugar and 4 egg yolks in bowl. Add cold water and mix. Sift flour and baking powder. Then put flour and baking powder into egg mixture, alternating with boiling water. Wash beaters and beat egg whites to stiff. Fold egg whites into other mixture with spoon. Put into cookie sheet or shallow pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes.
Can be rolled with jelly or icing as a roll or served in pieces. Ice as desired.

ICE WATER CAKE

2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1 1/2 c. cold water
3 1/2 c. cake flour
4 tsp. baking powder
5 egg whites
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream sugar and butter; add sifted cake flour and water alternately ending with about 1/2 cup flour. To this add the baking powder and add vanilla. Beat egg whites, add last.

FLUFFY ICING:

1 1/2 c. sugar
2 egg whites
2 tsp. white syrup
1/3 c. water
Pinch of salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Add all ingredients except vanilla in double boiler. Cook 7 minutes. Remove from heat and beat 1 minute. Add vanilla.
