My friend bought a dog that was pregnant and surprised them with a litter of 9 puppies a month later. He wasn't too happy about it, but he managed and sold all the puppies, but one and now I have him. The puppy is a male 5 week old Pitbull/ Bull Terrier mix and I am trying to figure out why he is so small. He weighs about as much as a 20 oz Pepsi and is just about as long as the bottle. Now I have seen plenty of Pitbull puppies, but not even the runt of one of those litters compares to how small this little guy is. So if anyone might have seen puppies from a similar mix, were they also this small or do you think it could be a health problem of some sort?

I didn't buy the puppy, I am watching him for my friend because they have bigger dogs and he was afraid of the little one getting hurt. And I can't bring him back to his mother because she died when he was 4 weeks old, and has already started on "mush".

Get a baby bottle and a few cans of goats milk (with the canned milk in the supermarket). You can let him nurse from the bottle a few times a day, and at 5 wks, you can soak some kibble in 50/50 water/goats milk until it is soft enough to mush with your finger (once or twice a day).
If there are no health issues, he will thrive in his own time!

This puppy is way too young to be away from his mother!!!
Yes, it may be a health problem - there are vets for that. They'll know.
Also, who knows how many males this poor dog was bred to. could be a different father, too. Could be she was bred over a period of a week and this one's premature. If you want a healthy dog, get him to a vet since you don't seem to know how to look after a puppy, let alone one who should not be away from his mother and litter mates!

If he is 5 weeks old he is too young to be away from his mother and weaned. His size is because he should still be with her.
Can you bring him back to her for 3 more weeks?
If not, take him to a vet for specific advice.

All dogs doesn't have to be the same, some may be special like yours, born small in size. You could consul a vet and check if there's any problem in its growth...if there isn't that means its fine...
