It appears to me, after reading many of the religious posts on yahoo, that people from all religions suffer from a severe lack of humour.

Why is this?

Ok let me add my experiences - as I have noticed it elsewhere, not just on yahoo.

I grew up in a Catholic girl school, & we were expected to go to church frequently.

Never once did we ever have a good chuckle in there! Maybe if a little fun or humour had been injected into the excruciatingly long sermons - they'd have managed to convert more of us into following their teachings (dictates)

Hmmm ...second thoughts maybe it's as well they didn't.

Some of the answers here sound as though I have been misunderstood - I don't consider "insults" as being humorous at all. Irony amuses me as does a lighthearted sarcasm and the traditional good old fashioned humour.

People that find insults in any form - amusing or clever, are obviously lacking in the old grey matter department.

And that goes for idiots that call themselves religious or atheists.

ur right and its really `suffering'.suffering is a part and parcel of every religion, though ideas connected to the value of suffering is currently `thumbs down', at least in the public realm..religios people, not all, are deadly serious.there are exceptions :
a] given the absence of jokebooks and fables, religions contain many parables that are humerous.that's the best way of transmitting a doctrine.
b] Yoga has exercies to elevate your sense of humour.
3] Numerous religious sects engage in collective laughing sessions but its difficult to say whether its real or contrived humour.
4] In the SUFI tradition, humour is rated high. check out on Mulla Nassiruddin's tales.
5]Enjoyment, fulfilment should not be confused with humour.
6]Earlier, bacchic and saturnalian occassions, had an overload of humour
7] The charavaks, an ancient tradition in India with a strong lineage in materialist terms, would openly use humour and sarcasm to expose brahamanical superstitions. Many were jokers.

Personally I have a great sense of humour and am a Christian

I think the issue is that a person's religion is very important to them and thus feel insulted when people make fun of or pass derogatory comments about their religion.

Kinda like if people had to insult you parents or kids

At the end of the day there are two ways to handle the perceived insults 1) Smile and move on or 2) Get angry

Unfortunately most choose option 2)

You don't think I'm funny??? That's sad... guess I will have to try harder (or maybe I already try too hard).

I can't speak for other faiths, but Christians should have a sense of humor... maybe some of us have mistaken our cross for a suppository... (yeah, bet that's a mental image you weren't ready for).

C'mon Christians... smile a little, laugh a lot... remember... you catch more flies with sugar than with vinegar.

St Francisc of Assisi created the Franciscan Order in which all the creation of God was to be praised and we were to rejoice in front of the marvels of the world. He proposed a religion in which people could be happy. And why couldn't they be. God created the world - we should be happy about that, God created nature - we should be happy about that, God exists - we should be happy about that.
Also please read Umberto Echo's "Le Roman de la Rose". It really brings some nice ideas about humour and religion and is all for it

It's one of life's great mysteries... Technically speaking, a person with a sense of humour will never become a religious fanatic.

Because my dear we are all little pinheads with sticks up our arses that sing "bringing in the Sheaves." to our children while teaching them how to kill those who blaspheme with a sponge and a can of bean soup!

DUH!!!!

I still retain my humor and knows GOD is humorous too....otherwise we would'nt have that ability to laugh....
