Not many. In the 20th Century, the Korean and Vietnam wars are the only major wars started by state-avowed atheists (meaning: Communists). The others were not necessarily started for religious reasons but were started by believers.

WW1, WW2, Korean War, Vietnam, American Civil War, etc.......People have to realize that almost ALL wars are started by governments with no religious affiliation (communists are hard core atheists). The Crusades were religious driven. The current Iraq war isn't because even though GW is a devout Christian, the entire US Congress that had to approve the war isn't.

Your right but you should have re-worded it to how many people have been killed or put in jails by athiests. China, Vietnam and especially Russia did such a great job. They have done and are still doing such things to anyone who is too religious for their liking.

Oh I forgot to mention North Korea. They love killing Christians.
Oh and who can forget the 70s as Communists swept through so many nations trying to take over governments with their athiesism killing so many people on the way. Massive slaughters in Indonesia. Both sides did the killing but the communists started that one.

Actually the 100 years war with Britain and France had nothing to do with religion. The American,French and British revolutions had nothing to do with Religion.Or any of the civil wars. Romes conquest of the world, the Greeks, the Assyrians, the Egyptians world conquests had nothing to do with religion. Not to mention the Mongols. WWI, WWII Korea, Napoleon, again nothing to do with religion. Hitler hated religion, Stalin killed anyone involved with a church, heard of Pol Pot, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Stalin, Kim Jong I and II, were all atheists. People are still persecuted in China for attending Church.
Want me to go on? How about Babylon's world dominance, The Spanish American war, The war of 1812, the French and Indian wars, The British wars in Africa with both natives and Boers, Spain's wars with Britain ( see Armada),
The Russo-Japanese war, the ancient wars between the Chinese, the Mongols and Japan, etc..etc..
So if you leave out the endless fighting in the Middle East from the Crusades till now, all the rest were over land, power, and money. LEARN your history before you run off at the jaw.

very few in comparison to wars started by religious people... but that is because there are far more religeous people than athiests.

I would say wars are mainly fought for power, control, expansion, reaction to a percieved threat, etc. Although the people who start wars often believe they have god or the gods on their side, it is not always the reason for fighting.

Maybe all of them.

Just because a man declares himself as belonging to a religion does not make it so, if he does not practice that religion.

Any man, men or women that starts a war, must have greed and or hate in their hearts.

Surely if you truly believe in a God - you must also truly believe that killing and maiming another human is not right under any circumstance. Even if your personal bible says "an eye for an eye" - you know it is wrong.

Just my personal opinion, as a strict passive activist, but then again - are you an athiest if you have no religion but still believe in some sort of God?

I'm gonna steer clear of these religion questions - they're giving me a headache ;)

What a ridiculous joke. Again, this kind of statement exposes the ignorance of anti-atheists.

It is fabulously easy to partition off millions of people over thousands of years by only referring to the ones who were atheists. Does this mean that you can characterize them all? NOT AT ALL! It's such a farce that anyone even considers this possibly true at all.

Let me explain something, atheist means one thing; that this person does not believe in gods. THAT IS ALL! It does not mean they are smart, dumb, tall, evil, good, conservative, generous, boring, and so on.

You have made a fabulous mistake in believing that you can characterize people who belong to this "group". You can assign them no qualities, and you SURELY can't assign them any responsibility.

IF atheists WERE in fact a single, cohesive, homogeneous group, and all their actions in this world were driven by a single philosophy, mission statement, panel, council, leader or whatever you like, then SURE, go ahead and characterize and blame as much as you like.

Unfortunately for you, atheists, throughout history, are an extremely varied group, who only share one thing in common, a lack of belief in gods. You cannot characterize them in the fashion you have. Your attempt is laughable to any who have a grasp on truth, logic, and reality.

Your ignorance is of the same kind that supports racism and sexism. To dare to pick out a group of people and characterize them with such prejudice exposes your flawed thinking. Flawed by rules of logic and truth which are far beyond your understanding.

Will you next ask me how many single vegetarians have gone on to become murderers? It would be only a slightly less valid and meaningful question than the one you have asked.

Sadly, I know that many of those who stand against atheists and agnostics will not understand my answer. Their simple mental operations allow them to happily carve out and characterize objects and people with such broad strokes and oversimplified methods of idea formation.

If you're looking for a comparison for other religious wars, this is not an accurate question. You would need to specify that these wars were in the name of atheism against theists.

You want to ask "How many wars were started by Athiests for religious reasons?"

well, all and none. a war is hardly started by one person. It is a total effect. Did hitler start WW2? No, he provoked, then England, USA, France, they all joined in. War is never black and white. "good guys" are labelled by the winners.
